well the a.i. wasn't controlling him so much as it was sowing seeds of bad ideas into his head for the last few years. the program is gone now but the damage done nearly drove him over the edge.

Let's just say that hypothetically I have a parasitic artificial intelligence masquerading as a virus and lying in wait to emotionally manipulate and kill me so it can use my body for nefarious purposes.

That also nobody knows about, and that I would definitely be murdered for if the wrong people found out.
