[Maketh grins at that.]

Ah, well. We shall have to test that, then.

[She's quiet for a moment.]

I would have liked to have known him. Your brother.

[Unlike many subjects of her past, her brother is probably one of the few things that doesn't leave Rey melancholy. She even manages a fond smile.]

I think you'd like him, and vice versa... Orion's an idiot, but he's the first person to ever treat me like family.

[Before that, Rey didn't have a very healthy concept of what "family" is.]

I wish I had treated my family better, [she admits.] I'm not certain you would have liked them. My father was kind. A tailor. He made toys for the local children. My mother was a warrior. She never stopped being one.

They don't sound so bad. What makes you think I wouldn't have liked them?

[Maybe it has something to do with her mother. But Rey will just let Maketh paint her the picture, first.]

Because I'm not sure they would have liked me, [Maketh admits.] I never saw them again, after I enlisted. They died when I was in training. And they -- they were angry, when I left. I don't--I'm not who I was, when they knew me.

[Maketh's story isn't a particularly unusual one. Rey has heard of similar family matters from those who enlisted. Even some of her past selves believed that they were running headlong into war to escape something -- someone.

[Before she speaks, she reaches over the table to take Maketh's hand.]

What about now? You're not that same person.

I was a child.

[It's not much of an explanation, and Maketh knows it. She sighs, holding Rey's hand.]

They knew me as a child and now I am not. But it's done. I made my choices.

[circumitus]

You've changed from who you were. Change isn't always a bad thing.

No, I -- I suppose not.

[She gives Rey a faint smile.]

I think I get stuck on these things, sometimes. Wondering.

You're hardly the only one.

[Rey isn't just speaking for herself here, either. She knows plenty of people who get caught up in such things.]

It seems normal sometimes. Just don't do it too often -- you'll drive yourself batshit doing that.

[No, she's likely not. Maketh sighs.]

I should try to focus on the present. And what might come of it.

The present sounds like a good place to be.
