NOTE: As of 12/2016, Rey has adopted the alias "Fiona Stransky" when working with the Guard. Something to keep in mind, as Rey maintains a low profile with her involvement in the group. Other than what is mentioned in the Guard records, there is no trace of a "Fiona" identified on the network.
Well, that's actually a surprise, Carlisle has been very open to all the different schools, except for the one that includes healing. So, the comment takes him aback for a brief moment when he realizes it.
He should probably ask... When they are done with this thing which, by the way...」
Hey, Rey, do you have something with you that you always carry?
[That Carlisle isn't prioritizing healing in particular would be surprising to Rey as well. Considering how he's dying, how he's on borrowed time unless he actually plans to do something about it, she would think that he would want to make sure there are healers left who can continue his work. Maybe that's an inevitable outcome he doesn't want to think about yet, but. He doesn't strike her as the type to neglect the necessities.
[Before that can come up, however, Rey blinks at Atem, lowering her arm as Tripod pitifully bats at the end of the rod as if urging her not to stop. Sorry, little buddy, but she's distracted now.]
Not... really-- [No, that's not right.] Wait.
[With her free hand, she fishes out the dogtags under her shirt. She's always wearing them, but most people wouldn't notice since she keeps them hidden under what little layers she wears.]
[For a moment, Rey just holds the metal tags in her free hand, staring at Atem inquisitively. She'd ask what for, but she has a feeling, based on what she knows now.]
This have anything to do with what you're doing with Carlisle?
[Since Carlisle told her about the kid wanting to imbue some sort of protective magic against demons for her trip, she doesn't hesitate to slide the chain over the top of her hand before handing a pair of black dogtags to Atem. While they are certainly old, the quality of the metal and paint help to preserve a legible inscription.
[In truth, they're not Rey's dogtags. Not truly. Schuyler's is the only physical remnant she has of any one of her past selves, and so it's always been something she's held close to her for years.
「Atem takes them and instead of putting them immediately in his pocket, he examines the relic with genuine interest, the name and the rest of the inscription doesn't really tell him anything, but they are actually pretty cool looking.」
Didn't know they came in colors.
「Of course his own version of dogtags is way more flashy than that.」
「Of course she has! Not about them all, but he had the... pleasure to meet Safronov after all. She did mention something about successors Rey did mention being... eight other woman, or have their memories in some way. It's true, it's confusing and he never got the whole picture, but it's hardly needed, he's been putting the puzzle together for a long time now.」
Before Safronov and the argentine marine?
「See? He knows things... Maybe much more than she realizes given how he was wearing the Millennium Eye when ... you know.」
[Yeah, she'd rather not know about whatever he saw when he had that Eye on. Save for the "fabulous powers" she doesn't have a very concrete idea on what it did, anyway.]
After Silva, before Safronov.
Schuyler was... considered an "illogical personality".
[The order can be confusing when you don't have it all pinned down in your head like Rey does.]
Well, by Gregory's definition it was "illogical". [She barks a muffled laugh.] Guess they all start with an S. Not sure if that was intended or a coincidence...
[It's hard to tell with someone like Gregory, who was an overly emotional synthetic who wanted to make Rey suffer.]
「He lets the dogtags dangle from his hand, to which Tipod immediately tries to play with, but Atem catches him before he goes too far, keeping him on his lap for the moment. Poor neglected cat.」
[It's funny, no one's ever really shown much interest in Rey's past selves. Maybe it wasn't for a lack of interest and more that she didn't want to talk about it, but... They were part of Rey at some point. She can't deny that they ever existed, or that they left an impact on her in any way. That would be a lie.]
You know Safronov, and Silva, sort of -- the Argentinian. Schuyler, she was enlisted with the Royal Netherlands Army. Steyn was a South African soldier. Sarfati was in the Iranian Army most of her life. Sheridan was with the United Forces of Ireland. Schmidt, a German operative; probably worse than Safronov, really, and also lived the longest. Then there was Stone, a USMC, back when there was a "United States".
[All those bombshells dropped, the one thing Rey thinks to add is:] Didn't always look like this, by the way. Gregory would tend to... altered my appearance, to better blend in. But he got lazy sometimes.
[Like how people recognized Rey as Stone, Sarfati, and Safronov... All things considered, this body is Safronov's, so.
[She falls in quiet thought that it takes her a moment to figure out what Atem is referring to. She blinks at the inscription on the dogtags.]
Oh. That would be the name, soldier ID -- usually one's birthdate -- hometown and blood type. The latter two are fabricated, obviously.
「The dogtags make a little more sense now. And maybe knowing a little more about her previous selves might be helpful in the long run, given how suddenly Safronov appeared out of nowhere. All of them fall into the same general area of work, no wonder why she's so damn skilled at it.
South Africa, huh!?」
Did you ever visit Egypt? And, wait, United States disappeared?
[Her previous selves were complicated women, which makes sense given the way Rey is now. Having all their baggage on her conscience is a lot to handle; it's no wonder she went mad from it for a while.]
Briefly. Spent more time in the Congo jungles, but our unit got around.
The United States didn't... disappear so much as it was split, so... it's not so "united" anymore.
I've heard so much about other universes that are nothing alike Earth, but it's always a little more surprising to find out how different other Earths can be... I don't suppose card games weren't a thing in yours were they?
If they're anything like those stunts at the stadium, then yeah, no shit. But we're not without our glitz.
[Just maybe not with card games, which aren't everything in Rey's world. Maybe they'd be better off if it was, though. It beats the fuckton of death and destruction.
[For a moment Rey balks at Atem and she's not sure why. She probably shouldn't expect people to just... know these things, but it's gotten easier to bring up than it used to.]
Well, "war" might be a generous way of putting it. More like they were pitting humans at war with each other for a nearly couple centuries now.
[Want to know why she hates chess so much, Atem? It's because bitch AIs like IV has always manipulated whole countries like pieces for far too long.]

Hey, Rey, do you have something with you that you always carry?
「What an abrupt topic change.」

Not... really-- [No, that's not right.] Wait.
[With her free hand, she fishes out the dogtags under her shirt. She's always wearing them, but most people wouldn't notice since she keeps them hidden under what little layers she wears.]
Just these. Why?
no subject
Those are prefect-- Rey, could you lend them to me? I assure you nothing will happen to them.
no subject
This have anything to do with what you're doing with Carlisle?
no subject
Do you read minds now? Because yeah! That's it.
「He says with a cheeky smirk on his face. Nah! He knows they are friends now! It's only logical to think that maybe the priest told her about it.」
no subject
All right.
[Since Carlisle told her about the kid wanting to imbue some sort of protective magic against demons for her trip, she doesn't hesitate to slide the chain over the top of her hand before handing a pair of black dogtags to Atem. [Until now.]

Didn't know they came in colors.
「Of course his own version of dogtags is way more flashy than that.」
no subject
[Times change, and so do their identifiers. Microchips probably would have been easier, except not everyone is on board with the concept.]
no subject
Sch...
「Wait, hold on...」
How do you pronounce it?
「Is it German? Gods he's so illiterate! Get him books!」
no subject
It's Dutch, but people just say it like "Skylar".
[Unlike Schuyler, Rey at least pronounces it like the more comprehensive phonetic way. Her English was terrible.]
no subject
Does he want to ask?」
These are not yours, are they?
「He finally closes his small fist around them and puts them in his jacket's pocket.」
As long as you carry them with you they'll work.
no subject
[Has she ever told him about that? About her many past selves? She loses track sometimes when she's already got so much on her mind.]
no subject
Before Safronov and the argentine marine?
「See? He knows things... Maybe much more than she realizes given how he was wearing the Millennium Eye when ... you know.」

「Three out of eight, hard not to notice. He brings out the dogtags again, this time paying much more attention to the inscription.」
Can you tell me more about them?
「He won't push her to it, but after all, they are Rey in a sense.」
no subject
[It's hard to tell with someone like Gregory, who was an overly emotional synthetic who wanted to make Rey suffer.]
Um. What do you want to know?
no subject
「That's a start.」
And, what does all of this mean?
「He lets the dogtags dangle from his hand, to which Tipod immediately tries to play with, but Atem catches him before he goes too far, keeping him on his lap for the moment. Poor neglected cat.」

「Wow, what a world.」
no subject
Briefly. Spent more time in the Congo jungles, but our unit got around.
The United States didn't... disappear so much as it was split, so... it's not so "united" anymore.
Russia got it worse.
[Yeah. Rey's world sucks.]
no subject
What happened to Russia?
「It does, sorry Rey.」
no subject
[What do you take her for?
[She's a little more serious when he asks about Russia, though:]
They were the first to be successfully infiltrated by the synthetics. Most of its citizens were either killed, forced to evacuate, or go underground.
no subject
「Card games are everything!」
... Wait, you're at war with synthetics?
「Okay, he had seen stuff (from her head nonetheless), he knows more or less what she is, he still doesn't quite get it, but, that's a big revelation.」
Why?
no subject
[Just maybe not with card games, which aren't everything in Rey's world. Maybe they'd be better off if it was, though. It beats the fuckton of death and destruction.

Damn. And it has been going for quite a while, hasn't it?
「This is why card games are better! They solve quarrels and wars and anything you want.」
